What Is the Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain Tour?
The Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain Tour is a 5-day itinerary that connects two of the most recognizable destinations in the Cusco region with Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Instead of booking Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain and the Sacred Valley as separate excursions, this package organizes them into one itinerary with accommodation, transportation, guides, entrance arrangements and train travel.
The route follows:
Cusco → Pisac → Sacred Valley → Machu Picchu → Cusco → Rainbow Mountain
This allows travelers to experience Inca archaeological sites, Andean landscapes and two very different highlights of the Cusco region within the same trip.
Why Combine Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain?
Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain offer two completely different experiences. Machu Picchu focuses on Inca history, architecture and archaeology, while Rainbow Mountain takes you into a high-altitude Andean landscape known for its naturally colored slopes, between these two experiences, the itinerary also explores Cusco and the Sacred Valley, including Pisac, Chinchero, Moray, the Maras Salt Mines and Ollantaytambo. Rather than visiting Cusco only as the departure point for Machu Picchu, the itinerary gives you several days to experience the region.

Who Is This Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain Tour For?
This package is designed for travelers who want to experience several of the Cusco region’s major attractions during one organized trip. It combines archaeological and cultural experiences in Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu with a mountain experience at Rainbow Mountain. Unlike an Inca Trail itinerary, reaching Machu Picchu does not require a multi-day trek. However, the Rainbow Mountain portion does involve hiking at high altitude, making this day physically more demanding than the other parts of the itinerary.
Is Rainbow Mountain More Difficult Than Machu Picchu?
The Rainbow Mountain day is generally the most physically demanding part of this itinerary because reaching the viewpoint requires hiking at high altitude so the Machu Picchu portion uses train and bus transportation to reach the archaeological site, although walking is still required during the guided visit. Travelers should therefore consider their comfort with walking and high altitude before the Rainbow Mountain excursion.
What Should You Bring?
For this itinerary, we recommend:
- Valid passport
- Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
- Warm layers
- Lightweight daytime clothing
- Rain protection
- Sun protection
- Small daypack
- Water
- Personal medication
Rainbow Mountain is at a significantly higher elevation than Cusco and Machu Picchu, so clothing suitable for colder and changing mountain conditions is especially important on Day 4.
