Our Cusco South Valley Tour begins with hotel pickup in Cusco, after which we’ll head toward the South Valley to visit these ancient wonders.
Stop 1: Tipon – Inca Hydraulic Engineering at Its Best
The first stop on our journey will be Tipon, an impressive Inca archaeological site known for its sophisticated water systems. Here, you will observe both vertical and horizontal irrigation channels across vast agricultural terraces. The water flows underground to a central source and is then distributed by various canals, showcasing the Inca’s advanced knowledge of hydraulic engineering.
Stop 2: Pikillaqta – A Glimpse into the Wari Civilization
Next, we’ll travel to Pikillaqta, a pre-Incan archaeological site dating back to between 700 and 900 AD. This city, once a hub for the Wari civilization, showcases their architectural prowess. Made of stone, lime, and plaster, the buildings once housed an estimated population of 10,000 people. The site served as both a cult headquarters and an administrative center, highlighting the importance of the Wari culture in the development of Peru’s ancient civilizations.
Stop 3: Andahuaylillas – The Sistine Chapel of the Americas
Our final stop will be Andahuaylillas, a charming colonial town known for its magnificent Andahuaylillas Church. Built in the 17th century, this church is often called the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas” due to its extraordinary artwork, including pieces from the famous Escuela Cuzqueña.
