What Is the Machu Picchu and Amazon Tour?
The Machu Picchu and Amazon Tour is a 9-day Peru itinerary combining the country’s Andean region with the Amazon rainforest, the journey begins in Lima before continuing to Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You then travel by train to Machu Picchu, hike to Rainbow Mountain and finally fly to Puerto Maldonado for an Amazon jungle lodge experience. Instead of booking the Andes and Amazon as separate trips, this itinerary connects them in one organized journey:
Lima → Cusco → Sacred Valley → Machu Picchu → Rainbow Mountain → Puerto Maldonado
It is designed for travelers who want to experience archaeological sites, Andean landscapes and the Amazon rainforest during the same trip to Peru.
Why Combine Machu Picchu and the Amazon Rainforest?
Machu Picchu and the Amazon offer two very different sides of Peru so in the Andes, the itinerary focuses on Inca history and mountain landscapes through Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain, later, the environment changes completely when you travel to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway used in this itinerary for the Amazon rainforest, here, accommodation changes from traditional hotels to a jungle lodge, and the experience focuses on rainforest trails, wildlife observation and guided activities in the Amazon ecosystem. This combination allows you to experience both the Peruvian Andes and Amazon rainforest without arranging separate itineraries.

Who Is This Machu Picchu and Amazon Tour For?
This itinerary is designed for travelers who want to experience more than Machu Picchu during their trip to Peru. It works particularly well for travelers interested in combining Inca archaeology, Andean landscapes and Amazon rainforest experiences without organizing each destination independently, most of the itinerary uses tourist transportation, trains and flights between destinations. However, travelers should be prepared for walking at archaeological sites, jungle trails and the high-altitude hike to Rainbow Mountain.
How Does the Journey from the Andes to the Amazon Work?
The itinerary does not require a long overland journey between Cusco and the rainforest because after completing Rainbow Mountain, you spend the night in Cusco. The following day, the itinerary continues by domestic flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, from Puerto Maldonado, the journey continues to the jungle lodge, including boat transportation according to the lodge program. This creates a clear transition from the high Andes to the lower elevation Amazon rainforest.
Is Rainbow Mountain the Most Difficult Day?
Rainbow Mountain is the most physically demanding excursion included in this itinerary because it involves hiking at high altitude so the Machu Picchu portion uses train and bus transportation to reach the archaeological site, although walking is required during the guided visit. Amazon activities also involve walking on jungle trails, but the conditions are very different from the altitude experienced at Rainbow Mountain, travelers should consider their comfort with altitude and hiking when planning this part of the trip.
What Should You Bring?
Because this itinerary crosses very different environments, packing should account for both the Andes and the Amazon.
We recommend:
- Valid passport
- Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
- Warm layers for Cusco and Rainbow Mountain
- Lightweight clothing for the Amazon
- Rain protection
- Sun protection
- Insect repellent
- Small daypack
- Reusable water bottle
- Personal medication
The temperature and environment can change considerably between Rainbow Mountain and Puerto Maldonado, so layered clothing is particularly useful.
